I was recently given an invite to Dropbox, so I thought I would check it out. It’s a rad little app for Mac OS X that automatically syncs a folder with a server, making your files accessible anywhere and by anyone. Dropping files into this folder automatically uploads a copy to the web so it is always accessible via their website (www.getdropbox.com). Unlike using an FTP client, the Dropbox is integrated in the Finder and acts just like any other folder - files within are stored on your computer. The difference is that the Dropbox app that runs in the background (25 Mb) will automatically upload anything that’s in there. Impressively, the Dropbox is smart enough to only send changes to your files instead of the entire file itself, and keeps a backup of each change or deletion (Time Machine, anyone?). You can choose to make a folder public or private, and right clicking on the file in a public folder will allow you to copy a download link in order to send to a friend. The web interface is not great, but fast improving, and it can automatically display photos placed in the Photos folder in a browser-based web gallery that you can share as well. Dropbox allows 2 Gb of storage during the private beta period, and plans to have 1 Gb free accounts in addition to various storage accounts for varying costs.
